Cruise ships in low season “compatible” with posidònia seaweed preservation, says CiF

The Formentera Council —by way of CiF president Jaume Ferrer— has made public the its stance on local disembarkations of cruise ships during the low season. Ferrer, who is also a member of the Consell d'Administració d'Autoritat Portuària, the administrative council of the regional port authority, announced: “The arrival of tourist cruise ships during the low season must be handled in a way that is compatible with the protection of posidònia seaweed”.

In response to a Balearic port authority communiqué recommending a halt to tourist cruise ship disembarkations in la Savina harbour, the CiF president promised: “Alternatives are being studied that could accommodate the arrival of such watercraft”. “One possibility would be that these ships anchor near zone two of the la Savina port, some 40 metres away from the sand-anchoring area, or another is that crews use their vessel's dynamic radar positioning system and avoid casting anchor altogether,” he said. As Ferrer explained: “Posidònia oceànica seaweed is Formentera's most treasured asset. We've got to protect and preserve it”.
