Book club encouraging islanders to 'read and revel' takes off at Marià Villangómez library

llibres-club-de-lectura1The cultural wing of the Consell de Formentera reports that on Tuesday 19 November at 8.00pm, Biblioteca Marià Villangómez will host the first gathering of the library’s book club, "Read and Revel" (Llegeix i gaudeix), with librarian Lorena Francisco Garcia.

The idea for the club took root among a set of local booklovers. Participants read a book at home and reconnoiter at the library on the last Tuesday of each month to discuss what they’ve read.

Education and culture councillor Susana Labrador described initiatives like the book club as “a way to promote reading among islanders, and, at the same time, create a group connection around a pastime that’s educational, key for developing critical thought and a great source of entertainment, too, plus you can do it anywhere, at any age”.

First book: The Dinner
Organisers of the first session have suggested Dutch author Herman Koch’s The Dinner, a stinging, provocative work that takes on the satisfied and complacent social classes in the Netherlands and, by extension, across Europe.

Marià Villangómez library in Sant Francesc has 10 copies of the book (El sopar in Catalan) which are available for checkout. All interested readers have to do is register by sending an email to biblioteca@conselldeformentera.cat, then stop by the library, pick up a copy of the book and read it before 19 November, when participants meet and share their thoughts.
