This Saturday, the seventh Illa de Formentera triathlon

triatlo1Alejandra Ferrer and Paula Ferrer, the respective president and councillor for sport of the Consell de Formentera, unveiled the programme for the seventh Illa de Formentera triathlon in a presentation at that took place at noon today. The two-modality event kicks off this Saturday at 2.15pm in es Pujols, when participants in the Sprint undertake a 750m swim trial, 20K cycling circuit and 5K run. The Olympic—1,500m in the water, 40K on two wheels and 10K on foot—starts at 4.00pm.

At the presentation, President Ferrer lauded the event, part of Discover Formentera in October. “Participation grows steadily every year; we couldn’t be happier”, she admitted, adding “fingers crossed, athletes and their supporters will get to experience the truly sensational month of October, and the chock-a-block slate of weekend activities that come with it”.

Sport councillor Paula Ferrer highlighted an already all-time high for signups—300 plus, a 30% uptick compared to 2018—and ongoing registration at www.triatlonformentera.com. Ferrer saluted “all the groups that have worked hard to make the triathlon happen” and asked for patience from islanders not taking part in the function during the planned traffic interruptions.

Manuel Hernández of Unisport Consulting, the group organising the trials, said roads from Sa Revista to es Pujols would be blocked to car traffic from 2.00pm to 3.30pm for the Sprint (the roundabout will remain accessible), and again for the Olympic modality from 4.00pm.

Trasmapi marketing chief Núria de la Torre was also on hand at the presentation. Trasmapi is the Illa de Formentera triathlon’s leading sponsor.

New car park at football pitch

aparcament-camp-de-futbolv21The sport department of the Consell de Formentera reports that a new parking area has been opened next to the municipal football pitch in Sant Francesc. The 2,698-sq.-m. lot has space for seventy to eighty vehicles. In addition, as government property, the new car park means savings of six thousand euros a year—the annual rent paid to occupy the previous lot.

The sport department has also purchased four seven-a-side football goals for use at the municipal pitch. The goals cost €7,457.33.

Sailers with disabilities wrap up course

curs-de-vela--2-1The Consell de Formentera Department of Sport reports that the summer course in beginners’ sailing for islanders at the Centre de Dia ended at noon today.

Working with monitors from the Municipal Sailing School (Escola Municipal de Vela) participants learned their way around a boat and the fundamentals of sailing, plus came away with familiarity sailing solo. Eight students set out with monitors from both the school as well as the dependent care facility on the final outing, which concluded with a dip at the beach.

Councillor of Sport Paula Ferrer said she was “thrilled with the new initiative”, coordinated in partnership with the social welfare office, and hoped “for ongoing collaboration with the Centre de Dia—the best way to make sure that islanders at the day centre can keep benefitting from such an enriching experience”.

The Consell de Formentera bought the 12-person boat which is used for lessons in 2017 with help from Obra Social 'la Caixa'.

Sailing class for Day Centre users with disabilities

vaixell-adaptat-escola-vela-foThe Sport department of the Consell de Formentera reports that beginners' sailing classes will be offered to individuals at the dependent care facility this July and August. The once-weekly classes will be held Fridays, imparted by workers at the Municipal Sailing School (EMV).

Organisers hope participants will come away knowing how to operate a boat on their own. Sports councillor Paula Ferrer stressed that the initiative, which is put together with help from the social welfare office, “is about making sure that service users at the Formentera Day Centre can benefit from the infrastructure and resources we have at our disposal”. “Summer is a great time to get outdoors and in the water, making people's day-to-day a little better”, said the councillor.

In 2017, Formentera's council purchased a specially-equipped, accessible boat for people with functional diversity. The 12-person watercraft is used by the EMV. Obra Social “la Caixa” helped fund the purchase.
