Artist Gilbert Herreyns donates work

foto-donacio---obra-gilbert-he1Formentera Council president Jaume Ferrer and painter Gilbert Herreyns took steps to make official Herreyns' donation of a painting titled “Entre la terra i el cel” to the Council. In 2018 the artist staged an exhibit by the name same at Sa Tanca Vella and committed afterwards to making the donation.

Acrylic and tempera on canvas, the work measures 225cm by 110cm and is on display in the Office of Culture of the administration. President Ferrer welcomed the gift, which will now become property of the CiF. Herreyns is a Belgian artist who has split his time between Eivissa and Formentera since 1971.

Pictured are Herreyn's wife Neus Riera, President Ferrer, Herreyns and Manolo de Oya, who is the exhibit's curator and a representative of Espai F.

Job opening for lifeguard

SocorristesThe Formentera Council human resources office reports that in anticipation of the high season crunch it is listing an opening for a lifeguard on local beaches.

All those interested can register their candidature at the SOIB (Balearic job seekers' service) until 9 June. Candidates must have completed supervision and assistance training for lifeguard and rescue operations.

Decision makers clinch regulatory toll to drive on Formentera

ple-consell-de-formentera prem1Members of the Formentera Council and opposition came together today for a special full-house assembly, a gathering marked by the announcement of definitive approval for a a fee drivers must pay if they wish to enter, circulate and park on public roads.

CiF mobility councillor Rafael González said he anticipated his department would begin validating reservation requests for July and August. Since formentera.eco went online April 15, three thousand three-hundred and sixty-six people have registered.

The one-off plenary also brought cross-party backing for the working codes for the registry of heritage declarations and registry of tasks appropriate to a range of public service positions on the Formentera Council. Also granted the go-ahead, this time despite PP abstention was the “Inventory of Assets and the Formentera Council's 2019 “Inventory of Assets and Rights” (Inventari de Béns i Drets).

Home for the aged
Assembly participants gave cross-party backing for the proposed amendment to a deal between the Govern balear and Formentera whereby the Palma administration agrees to foot the bill for 70% of the €2 million-plus assisted living residence while Formentera will be on the hook for the remaining 30%. Social welfare councillor Vanessa Parellada pointed out that the associated construction project was moving along quickly and is hoped to be finished by next year.

Formentera forces of order up their game on public safety

curs-tedax-formentera1The TEDAX unit of the Civil Guard facilitated a training course for the emergency response workers of the island this morning. The session took place at Formentera Local Police station and saw the attendance of officers and members of island law enforcement, Civil Protection, local Civil Guard, Formentera firefighters as well as lifeguard and rescue services and other individuals.

The TEDAX special officers gave participants an overview of response strategies in situations where public safety might be at risk or rescue missions involving micro-explosions to reach hard to access sites. The TEDAX unit of the Civil Guard are specialists in defusing explosive devices.

Participants of the training session also reviewed common interventions on Eivissa and Formentera in recent years, discussing past Civil Guard finds like explosives or navigational flares dragged by currents and washed up on the shoreline.

The day was also attended by CiF president's office chief Bartomeu Escandell, who praised such efforts as key to local emergency response training, and saluted the collaboration of law enforcement forces in “making Formentera a safer place”.

Formentera hosts training course for guides of search and rescue dogs

foto-grup-curs-cans1Formentera's civil protection office is hosting a course dedicated to the human guides of search and rescue dogs. With the help of five volunteer dogs, 11 individuals from Protecció Civil, Policia Local de Formentera, the firefighting brigade and the municipal animal pound are specialising in canine-assisted rescue.

Two professionals from Spain's canine rescue unit are on the island to give both theory-based and hands-on instruction. The training is designed to prepare participants to work with dogs to locate imperilled individuals as part of emergency search and rescue operations.

The €2,900 initiative is funded by the CiF president's office.
