Eba Marí Guaita’s “En paral·lel al cel” opens at Centre Gabrielet

cartell EN PARALLEL AL CElSacred geometry, starry skies and nocturnal seascapes . . . these are the inhabitants of Eba Marí Guaita’s universe, which the Valencia-born and Formentera-based artist channels in an exhibit due to take up residence tomorrow at Centre Antoni Tur ‘Gabrielet’ and set to stay until Saturday the 15th.

Through paintings in acrylic and resin, the artist reveals an inner world that is both hers alone and communal, and replete with symbolism. After a vernissage at 7.00pm on 6 August, En paral·lel al cel will be open to the public Monday to Saturday from 9.00am to 1.30pm and 4.30pm to 6.00pm.

Álvaro Mendoza’s “Aïllat” settles into ‘Ajuntament Vell’

cartell aillatThe latest display of work from Álvaro Mendoza, Aïllat, opens at the ‘Ajuntament Vell’ exhibition space today, starting a run that is scheduled to conclude 15 August. The artist describes the show as an “exploration of thought inside our soul”. “Whether voluntary or imposed, isolation is neither the beginning nor the end”, he explains. “It’s part of the process of transformation. Throughout the entire exhibit I attempt to become one with the free-form space where the simple gives meaning to the ethereal.”

The exhibit is open from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 7.00pm to 9.00pm. Closed Sundays and Monday mornings.

22-23 August, Formentera Jazz Festival goes virtual, taking performances and connections to social media

cartell 2020 FJF 2The Formentera Department of Culture reports that this year’s Formentera Jazz festival will be held online 22 and 23 August with a pioneering social media-driven offering of live concerts and connections.

Culture chief Susana Labrador said covid-19 behind the pivot from physical to virtual festival: “We’ve swapped the face-to-face formula for something even more innovative which offers health safeguards while remaining true to the festival’s spirit and showcasing Formentera’s natural spaces”. The consellera tied the move to “uncertainty surrounding present circumstances, particularly since most of our participating musicians were to be coming from off the island”.

The new programme features an array of ‘Connexions amb l’Illa’—performances broadcast from distinct corners of the island (cave, lighthouse, boat...) in such a way as to highlight the surrounding natural setting. Other artists like Federico Nathan, Valmuz, Pere Navarro and Yadira Ferrer plan to share select audiovisual content in a series of online mini-concerts under the hashtag #FJF2020.

There will also be virtual cleanup where people can learn more about Plastic Free Formentera’s efforts to take aim at microplastics: organisers will encourage participants to film themselves wherever they are picking up trash and microplastics and to post the videos on social media with the hashtag #RecogidaFJF2020.

With abstract pieces, Moni Formentera makes début at Centre ‘Gabrielet’

cartell 2020 moni formenteraFrom tomorrow, Centre Antoni Tur ‘Gabrielet’ welcomes Renéixer, a display of abstract pieces crafted by artist Moni Formentera by means of “pouring” — a method where acrylics are mixed in a particular medium to produce a liquid paint. With the technique, colours create shapes and flow in manners based on how they are poured and how the tableaux are handled.

The exhibition is the artist’s first at Centre ‘Gabrielet’. Self-taught, Moni Formentera holds accreditation as a local artisan and has worked with a variety of methods in recent years. She has also collaborated at the Centre de Dia and local primary schools.

The exhibition will run from 25 July to 3 August and is open from 10.00am to 2.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00pm.
